Mystical Head: Andrej

Alexei Jawlensky was a Russian expressionist painter whose small-scale portraits and abstractions conveyed emotional intensity through vivid color and gestural brushwork. Active in Germany from the early 1900s onward, he was a founding member of the New Munich Artist's Association and a key figure in Der Blaue Reiter and Die Blaue Vier, groups central to German Expressionism. His work has been held in major collections including those at MoMA. In his later years, Jawlensky developed increasingly abstract compositions based on the human face, reducing form to essential planes of saturated color.
