The Underground poster campaign commissioned women artists from its earliest years. The first known Underground poster by a woman, designed by Ella Coates, was printed in 1910, only two years after the campaign began. Others followed immediately. At least 170 women artists are known to have worked for the Underground, but the number is undoubtedly much higher because more than 1,200 posters are unattributed and many are signed only with initials. These designers included well-known artists such as Mabel Lucie Attwell and younger artists such as Nancy Smith, an avowed modernist who created 12 posters for the Underground.
