Pavel Filonov
Painting
Pavel Filonov was a Russian painter and printmaker who developed a distinctive aesthetic combining dense, intricate line work with visionary subject matter rooted in Russian Orthodox spirituality and folk traditions. Active from the early 1910s until his death in Leningrad, he created elaborate compositions built from infinitesimal gestural marks, a method he termed 'analytical art'. His small-scale tempera paintings and etchings depict biblical scenes, allegorical figures, and abstracted landscapes populated with symbolic forms. Filonov's work remained largely invisible to the Soviet avant-garde establishment during his lifetime, and most of his output was destroyed or lost.
