Photography
Ernest J. Bellocq was an American photographer active in early 20th-century New Orleans, known for his intimate platinum print portraits of women in the city's Storyville district. Working with a large-format camera and soft-focus technique, he documented his subjects with a formality and dignity unusual for the period and subject matter. His archive of glass plate negatives remained largely unknown until decades after his death, when they were discovered and printed by photographer Lee Friedlander. Bellocq's work stands as a complex historical record, combining technical precision with an unusual empathy for marginalized subjects.
