Clifton Johnson was an American illustrator, writer, and photographer active from the late 19th through early 20th century. Working primarily in pen and ink, he created illustrations for periodicals and books, developing a distinctive narrative style rooted in rural and small-town American life. Johnson also documented the American landscape through photography and wrote travel narratives that combined image and text.
