Painting
Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator whose work ranged from social realist canvases to commercial posters and graphic design. Active from the 1880s through the early twentieth century, he developed a distinctive approach to figuration that combined sharp observational line work with a commitment to depicting working-class and urban subjects. His prints and paintings documented Parisian street life, labor, and poverty with both formal sophistication and social sympathy. Steinlen's technical mastery of lithography and his prolific output across multiple media made him a defining figure in Belle Époque French graphic culture.
