Painting
William Merritt Chase was an American painter and influential art educator known for his virtuosic handling of oil paint and his role in introducing European modernist training methods to the United States. Active from the 1870s onward, he worked across portraiture, still life, and landscape with a fluid brushwork that reflected his study in Europe and his engagement with Impressionist light and color. Chase founded the Chase School of Art in New York and mentored generations of American artists, fundamentally shaping early twentieth-century American art pedagogy and practice.
