Frances Benjamin Johnston was an American photographer and photojournalist whose work documented American architecture, labor, and social institutions from the 1880s through the mid-20th century. Working primarily in platinum print and gelatin silver, she established herself as one of the first women to achieve prominence in documentary and architectural photography. Her images of the Hampton Institute and extensive surveys of American colonial and Federal buildings created a visual archive of national heritage. Johnston's unflinching approach to industrial and institutional subjects, combined with her technical mastery of the medium, positioned her as a pioneer in both photographic practice and the profession itself.
