Ernest Hébert
Painting
Ernest Hébert was a French painter of history and portraiture active throughout the nineteenth century. Born in Grenoble in 1817, he worked primarily in oil on canvas, producing large-scale narrative compositions and commissioned portraits of French bourgeois and aristocratic subjects. His technical facility and academic training positioned him within the salon tradition of mid-to-late nineteenth-century French painting. He died in Paris in 1908.
