The Golden Age I

Hans von Marées was a Prussian painter whose monumental figural compositions and classical restraint positioned him as a counterforce to German Romanticism in the mid-nineteenth century. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he developed a spare, architectural approach to the human form, emphasizing sculptural volume and planar composition over narrative or sentiment. His murals and easel paintings drew on Renaissance precedent while maintaining a distinctly modern austerity. Though his work remained largely confined to German collections and institutions during his lifetime, his formal discipline and rejection of academic sentimentality influenced subsequent generations of modernist painters.
