Joseph Edgar Boehm was an Austrian-born British sculptor whose portrait busts and public monuments defined Victorian figurative practice. Best known for the Jubilee head of Queen Victoria on British coinage and the monumental statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner, Boehm maintained an extensive London studio and produced substantial commissions for the Royal Family and aristocracy. His speciality in portrait sculpture is represented widely in the National Portrait Gallery, while his formal public works established a model for commemorative sculpture that dominated the latter half of the nineteenth century.
