Sir John Herschel

Julia Margaret Cameron was a British photographer who pioneered the use of soft focus and close-up portraiture in the 1860s, departing radically from the sharp, detailed conventions of her era. Working primarily in albumen print and collodion process, she created intimate, often theatrical portraits of Victorian intellectuals, family members, and hired models, frequently costuming them in classical or allegorical dress. Her work was exhibited at the Photographic Society of London and remains foundational to the history of artistic photography. Cameron's insistence on emotional depth and compositional boldness over technical perfection established photography as a vehicle for subjective expression rather than mere documentation.
