<p>This print depicts a closely cropped portrait of twin brothers; one stares at the viewer while the other gazes off to the side. This compositional type, popular during the Romantic era in Germany (around 1790–1830), was known as a <em>Freundschaftsbild</em> or “friendship picture” because it focuses on the connections and expressions shared between two individuals.</p>
