Pan and Syrinx

Herman van Swanevelt was a Flemish painter and printmaker active in the seventeenth century, known for his landscapes and historical compositions executed in oil and etching. Based primarily in Rome and the Spanish Netherlands, he developed a distinctive approach to Italianate landscape that synthesized northern European precision with classical structure. His etchings, in particular, demonstrate technical refinement and an interest in atmospheric effects across varied terrain.
