Painting
Gerard ter Borch the Younger was a Dutch Golden Age painter of intimate domestic interiors whose figures reveal psychological complexity beneath restrained surfaces. Working in Zwolle during the mid-seventeenth century, he established a new visual vocabulary for the genre scene, depicting people in the private spaces of the home with unprecedented attention to gesture, glance, and emotional uncertainty. His meticulous handling of light and fabric, combined with a cool compositional restraint, influenced Gabriel Metsu, Gerrit Dou, and Johannes Vermeer, reshaping the course of Dutch genre painting.
