The Veil of Veronica

Domenico Fetti was an Italian Baroque painter active in the Papal States and Venice during the early seventeenth century. Working primarily in oil on canvas, he developed a distinctive approach to religious and mythological subjects characterized by loose brushwork, dramatic chiaroscuro, and intimate scale. His compositions often departed from formal ecclesiastical convention, favoring psychological immediacy and emotional directness. Fetti's brief career, ending at thirty-four, left a concentrated body of work that influenced Venetian painting of the period.
