Dirck Hals was a Dutch Golden Age painter specializing in interior genre scenes populated by elegantly dressed figures engaged in leisurely pursuits, music, and conversation. His small-scale panel paintings established a template for the Dutch interior genre that influenced numerous contemporaries.
