William Etty was an English painter who established himself as the first significant British artist to make the painted nude central to his practice. Working from York and London in the early 19th century, he developed a distinctive approach to flesh tones and historical composition, studying under Thomas Lawrence at the Royal Academy Schools from 1807. His technical mastery of the human figure, achieved through rigorous academic training and study of classical precedent, positioned him as a foundational figure in British figure painting despite limited early commercial success.
