Thomas Bigelow Craig was an American landscape painter whose subject shifted decisively over his career from expansive meadows and streams toward intimate cattle studies. Working in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Craig progressively enlarged his bovine figures until they dominated the canvas, transforming the pastoral setting from context into accompaniment. His summer landscapes, rooted in the Philadelphia tradition, mark a move from topographic detail to animal portraiture as the primary vehicle of his composition.
