Richard Doyle was a British illustrator whose witty, intricately detailed drawings defined the visual character of Victorian periodical culture. He drew the cover for the first issue of Punch magazine in 1841 and designed its iconic masthead, a design that remained in use for over a century. His prolific work in wood engraving and pen and ink established a template for illustrated satire that influenced generations of comic artists.
