Rafael Alberti was a Spanish poet, painter, and playwright whose work spanned the twentieth century from the avant-garde 1920s through the postwar period. A key figure in the Generation of '27, he moved fluidly between Surrealism, Cubism, and social realism, producing collages, drawings, and prints alongside his celebrated poetry. His practice was inseparable from political commitment, particularly his opposition to Franco's regime, which forced him into exile for decades. Alberti's dual mastery of word and image made him distinctive among his peers.
