Cultural Positioning
Why this artist matters now
Olivia Kemp’s sprawling-but-intricate drawings show the dense landscapes of her interior world. She has received acclaim for her adept approach to linework, which is executed solely by pen. Kemp received the prestigious Richard Ford Award, supported by the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in 2015. The following year, she was awarded the Drawing Prize in the National Open Art competition. A graduate of the Wimbledon College of Art, Kemp builds fantastic realms in which she reinterprets sites from real life, transforming them into panoramas of her own imagining. These works explore themes like the resilience of nature and the impermanence of human society. Her drawings are included in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, The University of the Arts London, and The Rothschild Collection.
