Why this artist matters now
Howard Finster (1916, 2001) was an American self-taught painter and sculptor who created visionary religious works on found materials, principled refuse, and handmade structures. Operating from his yard in Summerville, Georgia, which he called Paradise Garden, Finster assembled elaborate mixed-media environments combining painting, sculpture, and installation. His prolific output included thousands of small painted objects, intricate wooden constructions, and monumental assemblages suffused with evangelical Christian imagery and folk narratives. Working entirely outside institutional channels, he developed a singular formal vocabulary that merged American vernacular craft traditions with idiosyncratic spiritual symbolism.
