Harry Callahan was an American photographer who developed a rigorous formal language in black-and-white and color photography, working with domestic subjects, urban geometry, and abstraction at an intimate scale. Teaching at the Institute of Design in Chicago and later Rhode Island School of Design, he shaped several generations of photographers through direct engagement with the medium's technical and conceptual possibilities.
