François Girardon was a French Baroque sculptor whose marble statues and busts defined the visual language of Louis XIV's court. He created monumental works for the gardens and interior spaces of Versailles, where his formally restrained yet deeply dignified portrait busts of the king established the model for royal sculptural commemoration in seventeenth-century France. His works exemplify the classical restraint and hierarchical grandeur characteristic of French court sculpture under the Sun King.
