About

Why this artist matters now

Factory Records was a Manchester-based independent record label founded in 1978 by Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus. The label fused post-punk and dance music with avant-garde visual design, most notably through Peter Saville's minimalist packaging and numbered release system. Factory's output, including seminal albums by Joy Division, New Order, and Happy Mondays, established a model where graphic design and sonic innovation were inseparable. The label's aesthetic, spare, conceptual, and rigorously executed, became as influential as its roster of artists.
