About
Why this artist matters now
Dylan Thomas was a Welsh poet and writer whose densely layered, rhythmically intense verse drew on surrealism, Welsh oral tradition, and a baroque vocabulary to explore themes of mortality, sexuality, and transcendence. His radio play Under Milk Wood and his poetry collections, including Deaths and Entrances, secured his reputation as a major postwar literary voice. His public readings and recordings were distinctive for their theatrical delivery and musical phrasing, which shaped how his work was received and performed. Thomas died in New York in 1953 at age 39.
