About
Why this artist matters now
Catherine of Bologna was a painter and Poor Clare nun active in fifteenth-century Italy. Working in tempera and gold leaf on panel, she created devotional images within the cloistered environment of the Convent of the Poor Clares in Bologna. Few of her works survive, but her practice exemplifies the role of women artists in monastic scriptoria during the early Renaissance. She was canonized in 1712.
