Bolton Brown was an American printmaker whose lithographic technique and landscape subjects helped establish fine art printmaking as a serious medium in early twentieth-century America. Working primarily from his base in Dresden, New York, Brown developed a distinctive approach to stone lithography that emphasized atmospheric effects and tonal subtlety. His prints of rural American scenery and architectural subjects gained recognition for their technical refinement and poetic sensibility. Brown's commitment to the artist's hand in the printmaking process influenced a generation of American printmakers working between the two world wars.
