Alfred Gilbert was an English sculptor whose ornamental bronze work transformed late Victorian decorative practice through intricate modeling and allegorical invention. Active primarily between the late 1880s and mid-1890s, he created the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain Anteros on Piccadilly Circus and a memorial for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, establishing himself as a master of public monument and fountain sculpture. His acclaimed works include the trilogy Perseus Arming, Icarus, and Comedy and Tragedy, which exemplify his command of classical subject matter and flowing, detailed surface treatment.
