About

Why this artist matters now

Alessandro Mendini is an Italian architect and designer whose work spans furniture, industrial design, and architectural theory. Active since the 1970s, he co-founded Studio Alchymia and was a founding figure of the Memphis Group, movements that rejected modernist austerity in favor of playful, pattern-rich surfaces and ornamental excess. His designs, in plastic, metal, and ceramic, treat everyday objects as vehicles for narrative and humor. Mendini's theoretical writings on design culture have been as influential as his objects.
