Hua Yan was a Qing dynasty painter born in Fujian province whose work exemplified the Yangzhou school tradition. Active in Yangzhou and later Hangzhou, he is counted among the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, a loose collective known for rejecting orthodox academic painting in favor of highly individualized approaches to landscape and figure work. His practice exemplified the Yangzhou school's characteristic blend of technical precision and expressive freedom, positioning him as a key figure in early modern Chinese painting.
