About

Why this artist matters now

Louis Gauffier was a French history painter who won the Prix de Rome in 1779 and spent nearly his entire career in Italy. Based in Rome from 1780 onward, he specialized in narrative religious and classical subjects executed in the late neoclassical manner. His training under Hughes Taraval in Paris equipped him in the academic tradition, which he sustained through decades of work in the Italian capital despite the upheaval of the Revolutionary period.
