Samuel Cousins was an English engraver and printmaker whose steel and copper engravings reproduced paintings by Turner, Lawrence, and other major British artists of the 19th century. Working in the tradition of reproductive engraving, Cousins achieved technical mastery of line and tone that made him one of the most sought-after printmakers of the Victorian era. His prints circulated widely and established the visual authority of canonical British paintings for a mass audience. He worked across both mezzotint and line engraving, demonstrating exceptional skill in translating the effects of paint into the precision of the plate.
