Solon H. Borglum was an American draftsman and sculptor whose monumental public monuments, including the equestrian memorial at Newark, New Jersey, established him as a leading practitioner of civic commemorative art in the early twentieth century. Working primarily in drawing and clay modeling, he developed a practice centered on heroic figuration and architectural grandeur. Based in Ogden, Utah, Borglum's formal approach combined classical compositional discipline with an ambition toward the monumental scale that would define American public sculpture of his era. His death in 1922 marked the end of a career devoted to national memory and public space.
