Gari Melchers was an American painter known for his large-scale figural works and murals that synthesized Impressionist light with a classical compositional tradition. Born in Detroit and trained in Düsseldorf and Paris, he developed a distinctive approach to narrative painting and portraiture that gained international recognition in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work ranged from intimate domestic scenes to ambitious public commissions, executed in oils and fresco. Melchers served as director of the American Academy in Rome from 1910 to 1914, where he profoundly influenced a generation of American artists.
