About

Why this artist matters now

James Heath was an English printmaker and engraver who specialized in historical and literary subjects rendered in precise line work. Active throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, he produced ambitious multi-plate engravings of canonical works and executed commissions for major publishing houses. His technical command of the burin and mastery of tonal gradation through systematic cross-hatching established him as one of the leading reproductive engravers of his generation. Heath's prints circulated widely and helped define visual standards for the interpretation of literary and historical narrative in Georgian and Regency England.
