About
Why this artist matters now
Carlos Raúl Villanueva was a Venezuelan architect whose modernist buildings defined Caracas's urban landscape in the postwar decades. Working in reinforced concrete, steel, and glass, he synthesized International Style principles with tropical materials and spatial generosity suited to Venezuela's climate. His major commissions included the Central University of Venezuela and numerous civic and residential structures that established a distinctly Venezuelan modernism. Villanueva's use of open-air courtyards, integrated public plazas, and bold structural forms created buildings that functioned as social infrastructure as much as architectural statements.
