About

Why this artist matters now

Shirley Clarke was an American filmmaker and video artist who pioneered experimental cinema and early video art from the 1950s onward. Working primarily in 16mm film and later video, she created formally inventive documentaries and abstract works that rejected commercial narrative conventions. Her practice ranged from choreographic film to portrait studies and expanded into video installation and performance in her later decades. Clarke's work remains central to postwar avant-garde film history and the emergence of artist video.
