About

Why this artist matters now

Il'ia Mashkov was a Russian painter and founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, a pivotal modernist movement in early 20th-century Moscow. His still lifes and portraits employed bold color, simplified forms, and a synthesis of Cubist and Fauvist approaches adapted to Russian artistic tradition. Working primarily in oil, Mashkov developed a distinctive visual language that bridged European avant-garde innovation and a distinctly Russian sensibility. He remained a significant figure in Soviet painting throughout his career until his death in 1944.
