Junichi Arai was a Japanese textile artist and innovator whose experimental work transformed postwar fabric design through the integration of synthetic materials and unconventional weaving techniques. Operating from the 1960s onward, he developed signature crinkled and three-dimensional fabrics that challenged the flatness of traditional textiles, often combining natural and synthetic fibers in bold configurations. His work expanded the conceptual and tactile possibilities of cloth, positioning textiles as sculptural and architectural material rather than purely decorative surface.
