About

Why this artist matters now

Robert Venturi was an American architect and theorist whose work fundamentally challenged the severity of modernist orthodoxy in the postwar period. He championed ornament, historical reference, and complexity in building design, articulating a philosophy that embraced contradiction and ambiguity as generative forces. His 1966 treatise Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture became foundational to postmodern architectural thought. Working with his wife Denise Scott Brown, Venturi designed buildings and interiors that incorporated vernacular materials, symbolic decoration, and layered meanings, rejecting the notion that architectural form must express pure function.
