About

Why this artist matters now

Joost Schmidt was a German sculptor and metalworker whose practice merged geometric abstraction with functional design principles emerging from Bauhaus pedagogy in the 1920s. Working in steel, wood, and bronze, he developed forms that integrated craft technique with modernist spatial thinking. Schmidt taught at the Bauhaus and directed its metalworking workshop, shaping a generation of makers through his synthesis of industrial material and avant-garde formal investigation.
