Günther Förg was a German painter and photographer who worked across abstraction, figuration, and architectural documentation. His practice encompassed large-scale gestural paintings, often layered with photographic imagery and text, alongside systematic photographic surveys of modernist buildings and urban structures. Active from the 1980s onward, Förg developed a distinctive approach that treated painting and photography as interconnected modes of inquiry rather than separate disciplines. His work oscillated between intimate, mark-based abstraction and coolly observational architectural studies, interrogating the relationships between gesture, representation, and documentary precision.
