Gerard Soest was a Dutch portrait painter active in the 17th century, born in 1600 and based primarily in England after mid-century. Working in oil on canvas, he developed a restrained approach to aristocratic portraiture that emphasized clarity of feature and subtle modeling of form over decorative excess. His practice bridged Dutch and English court painting traditions during a period of cultural exchange between the two nations. Soest died in 1681.
