About

Why this artist matters now

Ger van Elk was a Dutch conceptual and visual artist whose practice spanned photography, drawing, painting, and installation. Active from the 1960s onward, he engaged with perceptual phenomena and the nature of representation itself, often using photography and linguistic elements to interrogate how meaning is constructed. His work frequently employed wordplay, visual puns, and deliberate misreadings of everyday objects and situations. Van Elk's investigations into the relationships between language, image, and perception positioned him within postwar European conceptualism.
