Jörg Immendorff made large-scale, densely layered oil paintings that fused German history, mythology, and art-historical citation into acidic, theatrically staged compositions. His "Café Deutschland" series, begun in 1977, placed figures from Hitler to Joseph Beuys inside cabaret-like settings that mapped the political and psychological fractures of post-war Germany. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate.
