About

Why this artist matters now

Joel Shapiro built sculpture from simple rectangular and geometric forms, working within a Postminimalist register that resisted allusion to anything beyond the materials themselves. The compositions are almost entirely untitled, a refusal of narrative that keeps attention on structure, weight, and spatial relationship. His 1993 commission Loss and Regeneration, created for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., stands among his rare titled works, its restrained geometry carrying exceptional emotional charge. His work is held in major public and institutional collections across the United States and internationally.
