Joel Shapiro built sculpture from simple rectangular and geometric forms, working within a Postminimalist register that resisted allusion to anything beyond the materials themselves. His 1993 commission Loss and Regeneration, created for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., stands among his rare titled works, its restrained geometry carrying exceptional emotional charge.
