Francesco Clemente works across painting, fresco, mosaic, drawing, and sculpture, moving between figuration and Symbolism with a restless, body-centred imagery shaped by sustained immersion in Indian visual culture and the metaphysical preoccupations of Italian art. Born in Naples in 1952, he has divided his life between Italy, India, and New York, and that triangulation is legible in the work itself, in its iconography, its surface treatments, and its relationship to the sacred and the carnal. He was a principal figure in the Transavanguardia movement of the 1980s, which broke from Conceptualism and Formalism in favour of a return to the painted, symbolic figure.
