About

Why this artist matters now

Carroll Dunham is an American painter working across abstraction and figuration since the late 1970s. His practice emerged during the 1980s return to painting, when he began exhibiting with Baskerville + Watson. Dunham's paintings and drawings treat figuration and abstraction as conceptually inseparable, using gestural mark-making and formal ambiguity to collapse the distinction between representational and non-representational registers.
